Glandore, the first school to take part in the school sailing this year, faced some inclement weather. Unfortunately there was only one morning of their planned sessions where they were able to launch, and even then worsening conditions meant they had to head for the clubhouse after a short but exciting sail where spirits were kept high by the ‘singing’ boat. Hopefully we will be able to arrange suitable alternative dates soon.
Background to the School Sailing
The “School Sailing” program has been running for over a decade now. Each year the students of local schools get an invaluable chance to engage in the “Thrills and Spills” of sailing. The aim of the Program is to introduce the students to sailing in an informal way, have fun and enjoy themselves, and hopefully they will be encouraged to take part in the sport which is available on their doorstep.
There are four National Schools that are currently involved:
– Union Hall
The Program takes place in June, where each school has a three-day session and ending at the end of June with the Inter Schools Regatta. Again here the emphasis is taking part and having fun. But it also gives the parents an opportunity to meet up and mingle.
2017 dates as follows:
June 6, 7 & 8 Glandore
June 12, 13, 14 Union Hall
June 15, 16, 19 Abbeystrewry
June 20, 21 & 22 Leap
In the meantime you can view some of the memories.
