Glandore Harbour Yacht Club

The Club

Welcome to Glandore Harbour Yacht Club, the busiest, buzziest yacht club in West Cork!!

From humble ‘mobile’ roots in 1987, GHYC has evolved into a fantastic fun family sailing club which is now full-on active from May to September every year, made totally complete with the purchase of our very own clubhouse on School Road in 2012.

GHYC has two very active keelboat fleets (Dragons and Squibs) and once they launch at the beginning of May it’s all systems go, with tight, competitive league racing on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and lots of other events in between.

Then the Juniors start returning like swallows in the Spring, kicking off with our very successful Primary Schools Programme which sees 4 local primary schools (Glandore, Leap, Union Hall & Abbystrewry) use the club’s facilities and instructors during the month of June to give their older pupils a Taste of Sailing.

After that, it’s full-on Junior season from the first Monday in July until the 3rd week of August. The ISA affiliated Junior training programme runs from dawn to dusk every day for 7 weeks, covering every skill and interest level for junior members from age 9 to 16. GHYC regularly has 80 juniors on the water with 15 or more instructors and helpers watching and guiding their every move. It really is a busy, buzzy time !!!

On top of this, GHYC has become synonymous with the Classic Regatta, a biennial regatta founded to attract gorgeous classic boats to come and huddle together for a week in beautiful Glandore Harbour every two years. This year we had an absolutely fantastic week, kicking off with a mammoth Parade of Sail on Sunday July 23rd, all managed amazingly and super efficiently by Regatta Director, Sally Fegan Wyles and her hardworking committee.

And then just to make sure that our amazing committee is truly overworked, we host a whole range of social events throughout the season : from BBQs to curry nights to full sit-down 3 course meals in our ‘pop-up’ event space in our adjoining courtyard. Have a look at the social calendar for all the info on these events.

So the simple message is: watch this great new website for details of all activities that we have planned and then get on down to our busy buzzy club !!!

Thanks again to all of you members and friends for supporting GHYC’s activities and events – it’s the great sailing, great fun and great people that make GHYC such a wonderful club to be part of and here’s to another fantastic season this year.

Wishing you all fair winds, great sailing and plenty of fun.
