Dinghy Sailing Update June 2020 Notice No. 2

As noted in the first Dinghy Sailing Update, everything is being kept under review this summer and a few changes mean that a further update for the Club’s Dinghy sailors is needed.

Dinghy racing – Sunday afternoons

Following ISA guidance that racing is possible from the end of June, here is an update on the dinghy racing plans.

This year, to manage numbers and help ensure safe distancing for sailors, Club dinghy racing* will move to Sunday afternoons. First gun will be at 2pm and there will be up to 5 races on each day.

There are 2 consecutive leagues planned to run through July and August:

Early Summer League: 5th, 12th and 19th July

Late Summer League: 26th July, 9th and 23rd August

Numbers will be limited to allow us to comply with guidance on safe operations (20 boats for the Early Summer League). Places in the Early Summer League will be allocated to the first 20 sailors that submit registration forms. Those sailors that are not able to compete in the Early Summer League will be given priority in the Late Summer League. NB. A notice will be posted on Facebook when all places are allocated.

Unforeseen circumstances mean that it will not now be possible to register online. However, competitors can access the necessary registration forms below. These need to be completed and emailed to the Dinghy Class Captain who will confirm receipt and the competitors place in the League if they are amongst the first 20 applicants. There are also links to the Club’s Racing Terms and Conditions and the Members’ Race Agreement 2020 which competitors need to have read ahead of completing the registration forms.

TO REGISTER please complete and return the following documents:

Registration documents to be emailed to dinghycapt@glandoreyc.com as soon as possible to secure a place in the League:

Junior Sailing Courses

Please see the most recent arrangements for Junior Sailing Courses on the Club website here:

Gordon Cup

As a Club event, this event is planned to go ahead on Sunday the 2nd August. Further details of the entry process for this event will be notified in due course. A fee of €10/ boat (single handed) and €15/boat (2 crew) will apply. We are hopeful that it will not be necessary to limit numbers through use of specific safety arrangements such as staggered launch times.

Club Regatta

The Sunday of the Club Regatta (16th August) there will be the usual races for different dinghy fleets and an all-in event for which there will be prizes awarded.

Marconi Cup

As previously notified, the Club regretfully decided after much discussion and investigation of all options, that it cannot host the Marconi Cup in a way that is compliant with the guidance on Covid19 safety measures. For this reason, the Club has cancelled this event for 2020 but has offered to host a revitalised Marconi in 2021.

Women on the Water

Irish Sailing have introduced the concept of sailing in “pods”; groups of 5 to 10 sailors that are able to interact within boats. This should allow us to get some Women on the Water! to enjoy a little sailing in one or more pods!

As usual, those interested should get onto the WoW WhatsApp group to check out the conditions and interest on Monday each week and organise to get out.

Please contact Harriet (087 6508664) if you would like to be added to the WhatsApp group or find out more about Women on the Water.

Sailors on the Pier

In order to help safely manage numbers on the pier and keep people safe, we would ask that Club members planning to take boats out please avoid busy launch and retrieval times around sailing courses and racing. Times to avoid from the 29th June include:

Weekdays: 9:00-10:15, 12:15-13:30, 14:00-15:30, 17:30-18:30

Sundays: 1-2pm and 4-5.00pm

We ask all members to maintain the required social distance and follow all hygiene advice from Government and Irish Sailing.

Fundraising for Club Boats

Club Visions and Topaz dinghies are available this year for use on sailing courses and for hire. These boats get great use and are a very important resource for the Club to encourage and support people to try sailing and to develop their skills.

Our current fleet are showing their age and we need to raise funds to replace them. This is a big challenge, particularly under the present circumstances with so many good causes looking for support.

At the end of this season, or at the start of the 2021 season, we hope to run a Boat Jumble (or maybe 2!) to help raise funds. Would you be able to help….

by donating clothing in good condition (wetsuits, bootees, gloves, life jackets, wet weather gear, etc.) and any serviceable boat parts, spares, (whole boats even!) ?

by helping organise and run the Jumble(s)?

by coming along and finding bargains to kit out sailors and boats in your household?

Please contact Harriet (087 6508664) if you are able to help in any way. (Donations of items for sale can be made throughout the season.) Thank you for your support.
