GHYC At home regatta blown out!

After the beautiful weather of May the June holiday weekends sailing was totally disrupted by strong winds. The Kinsale fleets of cruisers and racers were the first to drop out and had bailed by the previous Wednesday. Despite the weather some forty club members committed to a curry supper on Saturday night.

A working party on Saturday morning led by Eamon Timoney completed repairs to the pontoon and attached it to the quay. Users are reminded not to tie their dinghies and boats to the pontoon but to use long painters to the quay or the temporary mooring line attached to the quay wall.

Additional Work completed to the Orkney Saturday morning where it was antifouled by Hal, Kevin, Peter and Domhnall.

The Squib fleet cancelled racing in the harbour on both Saturday and Sunday while the Dragons considered when to get their boats back from Baltimore.

The yard was cleared and decorated on Saturday by Michelle, Domhnall, Peter, Heather, Rua, Harriet and Kevin.

On Sunday morning a window of opportunity on Sunday afternoon was spotted by the Dragons, although Diarmuid O’Donovan had already sailed Jee in a single-handed dash on Saturday morning, leaving four dragons left in Baltimore Harbour. Moonshine, Aphrodite, Zu and Leah had an exciting race started by Diarmaid O’ Suilleabhain on Keiko in Baltimore Harbour at 3:30 pm. First across the line in Glandore Harbour was Aphrodite with Claire and Peter Hayes in a time of 2 hours 27 minutes, closely followed by Leah, Emma and Mark Barrett then Zu, Eamon Timoney with Domhnall Coffey, Rua & Cassian Mahmood then Moonshine, Jamie Frame and Tim Forde. Moonshine was scuppered early in the race by the spinnaker halyard being tied hard to the roller and not to the Spinnaker head!

A big thank you to the catering team on Saturday night, Michelle, Sally, Harriet, Elmarie also Fergal and Hal for running the bar. Thanks also to Cnoc Bui for the loan of tables and chairs and to Heineken for the beer and cider. Finally, thanks to Michelle, who was there on the wall to record the finishers on Sunday, and to Diarmaid O’Suilleabhain, Claire and Tim who provided safety cover in Keiko all the way round from Baltimore.
