Welcome to Glandore Harbour Yacht Club, the busiest little Yacht Club in West Cork
Over the last 35 years, GHYC has grown from humble beginnings into a very busy sailing club, while holding on to its informal family focus. Thanks to the great efforts of our members we now have a club house and pavilion, coming a long way from when we had to meet in the local pubs and run our operations from a container on the pier.
During the season (May –September) we have regular racing for our home fleets of Dragons, Squibs, with tight competitive league racing on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Our growing Dinghy Fleet starts in April, and sails on until November, racing every Sunday in Spring and Autumn, and during the summer.
In addition to our league races, there are lots of other trophy events.
Our sail training activities start with our National Schools Programme (Glandore, Leap, Union Hall and Abbystrewry National Schools) starts in the first week of June, giving the older pupils a Taste of Sailing. After that our regular Summer Sailing School starts the ISA sail training courses that run through July and August, covering every skill and interest level for our junior members from aged 9-16. These are very popular, and sell out very quickly. We are very proud of our enthusiastic team of instructors, most of whom are our own graduates, and who carry forward our tradition of having lots of fun while learning to sail.
In addition to all the activity on the water, we have a busy social calendar, with Curry Nights, BBQ’s, ‘ladies lunches’, not to mention the post racing sessions usually held at one of the local pubs.
All of this is run by dedicated volunteers from our membership, who work hard together as a great team, while still having good craic.
