Report on the 2013 CH Marine Glandore Classic Regatta Press Launch
We had a very successful Press Launch for this year’s Classic Regatta held last Thursday evening in the Heineken Ireland brewery, Leitrim St. Cork. Commodore Diarmuid O’Donovan welcomed the guests and thanked them for attending. Diarmuid told the guests that the first Classic Regatta was held in 1992 for the purpose of raising funds to purchase premises for the Club and that we had finally purchased a property last year, close to the pier, and are now converting it for the Club’s use.

Diarmuid said we were very happy with the level of entries received so far and particularly happy that the Jolie Brise will be attending Glandore in July as part of her centenary celebrations
Donal Lynch then gave a brief talk on the Classic Regattas since 1992. Nicholas Bendon of CH Marine said he was very happy with CH Marine’s association with Glandore Classic Regatta and also thanked his fellow sponsors for their support of the event.
John Dowling then gave a slide show with a description of some of the boats coming to our Classic Regatta. John also gave a brief outline of the programme planned for Classic week and thanked Jimmy Crowley and Gerald Butler for attending. Jimmy is a great supporter of Glandore Classic and will be in concert with his famous (reunited) Stockton’s Wing in Glandore Church on Saturday evening July 20th. He will also be on the water with his Drascombe “Queenstown Lass”. Gerald Butler will be giving a reading from his recently published book, “The Lightkeeper: a memoir” on Wednesday evening July 24th in Hayes’ Bar. He was one of Ireland’s last lightkeepers and was on duty at the Fastnet Lighthouse during the 1979 Fastnet disaster.
Diarmuid concluded the evening by thanking the guests and Heineken Ireland for hosting the Press Launch. The Classic Committee also thanks Richard Harrison for taking photos on the evening.
Note : Marcus Connaughton of RTE’s Seascapes radio programme recorded an interview with Donal Lynch on Thursday evening which will be broadcast in the coming weeks (Seascapes RTE 1 radio at 10.30 pm, Friday evenings.
The Gathering Cruise
The Irish Sailing Association are organising The Gathering Cruise to take place between July 17th and August 1st 2013. The Kinsale to Dingle leg leaves Kinsale on July 24th and we expect some of these boats to visit Glandore during Classic Week.
New Class in this years Classic Regatta
This is a new class in the Regatta for boats that are propelled by both sails and oars, depending on the conditions. Bantry Longboats and Drascombes are just two of the boat types that will make up the Sail & Oar fleet. We already have interest from boats and crews from Ireland and abroad. Some unusual and entertaining events are in the pipeline.
For more information in regard to the Drascombes please check out their web site
We are very pleased with the interest shown so far in our proposed Sail & Oar event. The Fionnbarra Bantry Long Boat has entered - details of the format of this event to follow.

Message from the Commodore
It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the Glandore Harbour Yacht Club, to invite you to come and participate in the 11th CH Marine Glandore Classic Regatta. We have planned a programme of events to encompass all classic boat lovers - from those who simply want to watch from the shore, to the most dedicated of boat owners.
With the beautiful backdrop of Glandore Harbour, this 11th edition of our bi-annual event promises to build on the spectacular showpiece that it has become.
We do hope you will join us and I look forward to welcoming you to the 2013 event.
Diarmuid O'Donavan, Commodore GHYC
We are pleased to announce the opening of entries for the 2013 CH Marine Glandore Classic Regatta. We are preparing a full programme of activities both afloat and ashore.
As well as our usual harbour and offshore racing we are planning two events to cater for bigger cruiser and racing boats. We are planning a race to the Fastnet Rock (20Nm.) mid-week to celebrate the visit of the Jolie Brise on her 100th anniversary. The Jolie Brise is a Le Harve Pilot Cutter built in 1913, won the first Fastnet Race in 1923 and again in 1929 and1930. She still holds the record for the most Fastnet wins. January 2013’s Classic Boat Magazine names her as “one of the most famous yachts in history”.
The other new event planned is a cruise to Castletownshend (6Nm.) with a picnic or a visit to Mary Ann’s.
The programme also includes a full social programme.
This year The Gathering Cruise is being organised by the Irish Sailing Association. The cruise starts from Dun Laoghaire on Wednesday 17th. July. The boats will leave Kinsale July 25/26th. on route to Dingle. We are looking forward to boats attending Glandore Classic Regatta prior to joining the cruise to Dingle.
We will send Monthly newsletter updates as we develop the events programme for what will be the 11th Glandore Classic Regatta
