Hey! I’m a Mom of 4 from Clon and have done my competent crew sailing course. I went out racing on Rory Doyle’s boat in Glandore last night for my first ever race – loved it! I’m a beginner, am keen to learn more, and look forward to helping as crew 😊

Crew Wanted by streetiolaire@hotmail.com
The Dragon gypsy age 90 the oldest Dragon in the world still regularly racing, and Don Street age 93 the oldest Dragon skipper in the northern hemisphere is looking for a couple of crew to train.
Gypsy has been a crew training boat for 29 years. When I purchased gypsy in the fall of 1983 and proposed to race her in 84 everyone asked how was I going to find crew? At that point GHYC had not been formed. There was no Junior program. I said my crew will be my two sons D3 15 Richard14.In 1984 Gypsy raced with second rate sails that arrived with the boat. Despite our very young crew we finished respectably
In 85 we did much better and fairly regularly won races
N 86 we did very well winning many races, including the Rose Bowl Richard being 16 D3 17. We also won the Dragon Derby, 14 races in two days. That was the year when I was doing a fair amount of business in London with Lloyd’s. I had to spend a weekend in London so I told the boys to race gypsy in my absenceMonday I called Trish who said” I don’t think we need you anymore! “.I asked” wh”
she said” talk to Richard” . He reported they won on Saturday but apologized they only came in second on Sunday!87 we again one the Rose Bowl again the Dragon Derby. We did not repeated 89 as competition had become much stronger, many newer dragons had been purchased, some
boats had purchased new or very good second hand sails.
My sons got older and went their separate ways so I started training replacement cruise, all juniors.
Eight years ago I suddenly discovered as the end of the season approached I had no crew for the last few weeks of racing.
We recruited some local young sailers.
We did 8 races finished respectably.
Not only do Gypsy crews learn how to effectively race the Dragon but they also receive lessons on seamanship which are not part of the GHYC/ISA training program.
The only sailors in Glandore who know how to properly coil a line, split the coil and accurately throw 15 m of line and have the end land where it is intended to land are those who have qualified as crew on Gypsy
They learn the following knots, how to tie them, and what knots should be used for the job.
And they learn to properly whip/serve the ends of lines so they do not unravel. Electrical tape is a poor substitute for a proper whipping
.
They also learned a row a boat, not only forwards but backwards, and learn to spin the boat in one place clockwise, counterclockwise.
When they have learned all the above and qualified as a racing crew on Gypsy, they receive a Capt. Curry Stainless steel, lockspike bosons mate knife.

or stop me if you see me in cold-weather, a blue wollen watch cap with a white beard underneath the cap.
Sunny weather a big broad brimmed white Tilly hat with a white beard underneath the hat.
