GHYC, week 2

Week one wrap up

ISA

Inspection

Irish Sailing performed their Centre Inspection early this year. This is usually a good experience as the cigire arrives and offers advice on operating a sailing centre in a safe and efficient way. Over the years they have seen most of the edge cases that happen so rarely that you may not be prepared for them.

Points of note:

  • If you have a boat insure it
  • Correct clothing on water, it can turn cold quickly
  • If you have a powerboat,  secure the fuel tank correctly
  • Always carry a first aid kit

Checklick

Irish Sailing runs its certification program electronically through the Checklick platform.

If you are not registered for this you should do so.

Dinghy Racing

Marconi & Team Racing

Marconi training takes place on Monday & Friday evenings from 5.30. All sailors that have passed Basic Skills are welcome to take part. The focus is on team selection for the Marconi.

Two weeks after the Marconi, the Club will be running the Fauxconi Cup which will involve more junior teams, and we hope to accommodate all who wish to sail in that event.

At the end of the summer GHYC also hopes to send 1-2 teams to compete in the Elmo Trophy Team Racing event in the Royal St. George Yacht Club (Dun Laoghaire).

Tuesdays and Thursdays

There will be racing every Tuesday and Thursday evenings after courses end. These races are open to all Club members and those doing courses are encouraged to take part for fun and to gain practice and improve their skills.

  • Tuesdays 5.30 – Team racing (sailors will be placed in boats & swapped about during the evening)
  • Thursdays 5.30 – Fleet racing (sailors can use their own boats or request use of Club dinghies)
  • July League for Thursday racing (7th, 14th, 21st & 28th July)
  • August League for Thursday racing (4th & 11th August)

Dinghy Race Events

The following are the GHYC Dinghy competitions currently in the diary:

  • 23rd July Marconi Cup
  • 31st July Gordon Cup
  • 7th August Fauxconi Cup
  • 14th August Glandore Regatta – Dinghy races

Second Hand Kit

The Club has a “Second Hand Kit Sale” rail for wetsuits, bootees, gloves, lifejackets, cags, etc. The aim of this is to provide an opportunity to pass on gear which is still in good condition that sailors have grown out of and at the same time help raise funds to ensure we can regularly renew the dinghy fleet. If you would like to donate items that are still good to go, please hand them to the Dinghy Captain (0876508664)  or one of the Sailing Centre staff. Remember that you are welcome to come and see what is available in the Club yard at any time.
