New Initiatives for GHYC Racing in 2024

Maybe you’ve never raced before (maybe not even sailed!) or maybe you’re an old hand…the Sailing Committee is keen to encourage everyone to get involved in club racing and to change it up for some fun – so check out these new proposals for the 2024 season…

All in Craic (All Ages)

Thursday evenings, 5 weeks (following Spring Dinghy League) 16th, 23rd & 30th May, 6th & 13th June. If you’ve a dinghy and it moves – use it! The aim is to get everyone who can out on the water and back in the groove ahead of the season by having fun. The format will be finalised depending on who makes it out. (€10 p.p session)

Team Racing prep (Junior Sailors only)

Last 2 weeks of June (Tues 18th & 25th and Thurs 20th & 27th), 4 evenings of Team Racing training to try to give us a head start in getting more sailors involved and training for the Marconi which is SO early in the season. Those interested in competing can then discuss the best day/time for further training. (costs to be covered by the club)

Quest evening racing (All Ages)

This will be done every Thursday evening (when dinghy training will be running) for 6 weeks from 4th July to 8th Aug (inclusive). Each night is a stand-alone event aiming for 3 races. People who are interested sign up using a spreadsheet link for the coming week ahead. Crews are assigned randomly on the night, based on those interested and ensuring that more novice sailors are matched with more experienced ones. To ensure the evening remains challenging for all involved, the first half of the competitors to finish in the first race will start the second race at a gun one minute after the “start” and work to catch the other boats. We’ll refine this idea as it goes; deciding on the use of spinnakers, length and location of course, even including a team race option. If you fancy trying out a different class, having a go at racing, or just an evening on the water – get your name down! You only commit for one evening at a time. (€10 p.p. session)
