PIER SITUATION. MEETING WITH CHRISTOPHER O SULLIVAN TD

A big thanks to Christopher O Sullivan TD for taking the time out to travel to Glandore Pier last night to hear the concerns of local residents, sailors, local business owners, rowers, kayakers, swimmers , members of the Harbour User Group and GHYC members as well as Gail McAllister representing Irish Sailing about plans by Cork Co Council to curtail use of the Pier in a fashion which would mean the closure of the sailing school and similar devastating effects on all harbour users and businesses who rely on visitor numbers. Everyone present, from all sectors of the community, and local groups emphasised to Mr. O Sullivan their total and unified opposition to the plan and their upset about the manner in which it has been proposed, with no consultation or input of any kind from stakeholders and local communities. Mr. O Sullivan stated that he fully understood what the impact would be and he urged the Club to make contact with the County Harbour Master to cooperate on a more suitable plan. The use of available public funding to improve rather than curtail facilities was advocated by everyone present in areas such as extending paving and the installation of racking for kayaks and dinghies and other smart and efficient measures to improve safety and make efficient use of the available pier footprint during the peak period, short as it is. We look forward with all other harbour users to cooperating on the development of a more acceptable and suitable scheme.  Thanks to all the GHYC members who travelled to the pier last night, even from Cork City, to express their concerns. Tim Forde. Commodore
